Whale & Dolphin Watching (Teno-Rasca)
The Teno-Rasca strait off Tenerife's south-west coast became Europe's first Whale Heritage Site in 2021 (World Cetacean Alliance), the third in the world. Resident short-finned pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins live here year-round, and November to February brings the best chance of migratory species passing through.
Boats leave from Los Cristianos harbour and from Puerto Colón in nearby Costa Adeje. Puerto Colón has underground parking (CLÜBO) beneath the marina, so you can drive over, park and walk straight to the pontoons. If you are weighing a boat trip against the inter-island ferries that use the same harbour, our ferry port guide explains how the port is laid out.
Choose a vessel flying the yellow Barco Azul (Blue Boat) flag — the official eco-certification. The rules require boats to keep at least 60 m from the animals, limit watching to 30 minutes and approach slowly. A Blue Boat flag is the simplest sign you are with a responsible operator.
- Departure points: Los Cristianos harbour and Puerto Colón (Costa Adeje).
- Parking: CLÜBO underground car park beneath Puerto Colón marina.
- Best season for migratory species: November to February.
- Resident year-round: pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins.
Siam Park & Family Days Out
Siam Park sits in Costa Adeje, about 8 km from Los Cristianos and a 12-15 minute drive up the TF-1 to exit 73. It is one of the easiest big attractions to reach in a hire car, and a free Siam Park shuttle also serves Los Cristianos, Las Américas and Costa Adeje if you would rather leave the car at the apartment.
- On-site car park: around €7 per day — confirm on siampark.net.
- Free car park opposite at Siam Mall / Magma Arte y Congresos, about 600 m away over a pedestrian bridge; it fills by roughly 10:30 in summer.
- 2026 standard ticket: about €44 adult / €32 child, rising to about €48 / €36 in July-August — confirm on siampark.net.
- Free Siam Park shuttle from Los Cristianos, Las Américas and Costa Adeje.
- Aqualand Costa Adeje is a separate water park nearby with a large free car park.
Arriving by hire car gives you the freedom to combine Siam Park with a beach in the afternoon, or to drive on once the queues build. If you are collecting the car when you land, our airport collection guide covers pick-up at Tenerife South, which is only a short hop from the park.
Beaches Within Reach by Car
A hire car opens up beaches that the resort buses never reach, from calm Blue Flag sand on your doorstep to wild black-sand coves in the far north. Conditions vary enormously, so the table below pairs each beach with its character, parking and safety notes.
| Beach | Character | Parking | Safety |
|---|---|---|---|
| Playa de las Vistas (Los Cristianos) | Blue Flag, calm, family-friendly | Harbour and PARKIA car parks | Lifeguarded, calm water |
| El Médano (Granadilla, ~22 km) | Natural beach, windsurf and kitesurf hotspot | Large free unpaved car park | Very windy |
| La Tejita (by Montaña Roja) | Tenerife's largest natural beach | Free car park about 5 minutes' walk away | Windy, can have currents, naturist section at the Montaña Roja end |
| Playa de la Arena / Los Guíos (Los Gigantes, ~28 km) | Dramatic black volcanic sand | Limited parking | Blue Flag but strong currents, frequent red flags, swimming often forbidden |
| Benijo (Anaga, far north) | Wild black sand, remote | Very limited parking | No lifeguard, dangerous currents, ~1h30 winding drive |
Black-sand beaches on the west coast and in Anaga look spectacular but are dangerous. Playa de la Arena and Benijo are known for strong rip currents, and red flags at Los Gigantes mean swimming is forbidden, not merely discouraged. When the flag is red, stay out of the water.
Teide, Vilaflor & the Lunar Landscape
Teide National Park is the standout drive from the south: take the TF-1 then the TF-21 up through Vilaflor, roughly 47-48 km and 60-75 minutes from Los Cristianos. The road climbs steadily through pine forest into the caldera, and our driving guide explains how to take the gradients and hairpins comfortably.
- Cable-car base sits at 2,356 m; round-trip non-resident adult fare about €40-42 — confirm on volcanoteide.com.
- The summit (Telesforo Bravo trail #10) needs a free permit from reservasparquesnacionales.es, capped at 300 people per day.
- From 2026 an ecotasa of up to €25 for non-residents applies to the summit and Montaña Blanca trails; residents and under-14s pay far less or nothing.
- Vilaflor (~1,400 m) is the highest village in the Canary Islands, with free parking by the church.
The Paisaje Lunar (Lunar Landscape) is a cluster of pale pumice pinnacles reached on the PR-TF 72 trail from Vilaflor — about 13 km and 4-6 hours round trip on foot. Note the trail can close from 07:00 to 16:00 on some days in May, June, October and November for mouflon control, so check tenerifeon.es before you set out.
There is a shortcut along the unpaved Pista Madre del Agua off the TF-21, but driving a hire car on an unpaved track voids your cover — and the track is sometimes barrier-closed anyway. If you want true peace of mind on these mountain roads, our no-excess car hire guide explains how excess and exclusions work. Keep the car on sealed roads.
A Quiet Southern Coastal Loop
For a calmer half-day, follow the TF-66 and TF-643 off the TF-1 at the Las Chafiras exit, about 12-13 km from Los Cristianos. This southern coastal loop is far quieter than the resort beaches and easy to explore at your own pace.
- Montaña Amarilla: an ochre volcanic cone with clear water, good for snorkelling and diving; free parking near the reserve, but no lifeguard.
- Costa del Silencio: a low-key residential stretch with rocky coves and sea pools.
- Las Galletas: a working Canarian fishing village with a harbour, seafood restaurants and dive boats.
The parking fringes around Montaña Amarilla are jagged volcanic rock and unpaved. Undercarriage damage is excluded from most cover, so park on flat, paved ground and walk the last stretch rather than risk scraping the underside of the car.
Stargazing on Teide at Night
Teide is a certified Starlight Reserve with some of the clearest dark skies in Europe, which is why night-time stargazing is so popular. The catch is the drive itself: getting up there after dark is far more demanding than the daytime trip.
- The access roads (TF-21, TF-24, TF-38) are unlit, winding mountain roads.
- You often climb through the 'sea of clouds', which cuts visibility sharply.
- It is very cold at altitude — sub-zero in winter — so pack layers.
- The cable car does not run at night, so the summit is off-limits after dark.
- Winter ice and snow regularly close the high roads; check the Cabildo before setting off.
- Stop only at designated miradors such as Tabonal Negro or the cable-car base car park.
Many visitors prefer a guided astronomy tour precisely to avoid driving these roads in the dark and the cold. If you do take your own hire car, give yourself plenty of daylight for the climb, watch the weather, and never park or stop outside a marked mirador.
